Neurology Residency

Moonlighting

Moonlighting is available to anyone who would like to help out during the weekends and make some extra money (for whatever you want, we won’t judge!). You can currently moonlight on the floor. If there is a surge in the ICU or staffing issue on stroke, then you may be asked to moonlight on those services (see rules below).

To sign up, please text the wonderful, smart and beautiful Amy Espinal with your requests. You can find the link to the schedule below.

Unfortunately, moonlighting is not available to residents that are on a J1 visa (trust us we know this sucks and have sought many remedies without violating federal law)

Moonlighting rules

Floor – Weekend ($100/hr)
– Two shifts to choose from, 7am – 11am or 11am – 3pm with your last consult at 10:30am and 2:30pm, respectively
– Cover stroke codes, consults (both ED and inpatient)
– You cap at 4 total (stroke codes+consults) per shift

Floor – Weekday Twilight ($100/hr)

– Monday to Friday from 5-10PM
– Cross coverage and outpatient calls unti 10PM
– Simultaneous stroke codes
– All consults and stroke codes between 7 to 8PM
– Back up for high on call volume:
— If the on call resident has gotten >7 new consults (~1.5 consults/hr) and stroke codes, twilight resident will see new consults
— If the on call resident gets 3 consults back to back, twilight resident will see the third consult

*These are broad guidelines to provide some structure for the on call and twilight resident. There will be scenarios where the on-call resident will need help outside these parameters (complicated cases, consults later in the shift) and there should be a conversation about what the twilight resident can do to help alleviate the on-call resident’s work-load.
Similarly, the twilight resident is not there to take over all the on-call residents’ consults, stroke codes, vand workload entirely.  The twilight resident’s role is to offload work during high call volumes and reduce background noise so that the on-call resident can focus on and learn from new consults and stroke codes.

ICU ($100/hr)
– Weekend day shift from 6am – 2pm
– Cover 4-6 primary ICU patients

– Night shift from 6pm-6am
– Cross-covering patients and providing assistance to the night time fellow

– To sign-up for ICU shifts, please review the APP Moonlighting Schedule to see which shifts are available and text Amy or one of the chiefs if you are interested in signing up.

Stroke ($100/hr)
* Open only if a shift is announced
– One shift from 7am – 3pm
– Cover a total of 8 patients (stroke consults + primary stroke, NO stroke codes), with last consult at 12:00pm

– Only available if there APP is short-staffed
